Rugged Computing Basics and What To Look For

Understanding the different specifications and features that are available in the various rugged products can be a daunting task. Especially if you are new to the market. While you may have a general idea of what to look for in a rugged unit, we recommend reading through our getting started guide to get a solid grasp on the technologies that are available to you.

The Key Terms

Depending on your requirements and specific environment you'll be looking at a fully ruggedized system, or a semi-rugged, or durable unit. The key differences here are narrowed down to the level of punishment a unit can take. Fully ruggedized units can handle drops, immersion in water, rain and the bumps and grinds of a demanding environment. While the semi-rugged or commercial durable units can't take that level of a beating, they aredesigned to be a bit more resistant to the bumps and knicks of a life on the road and are best for the road warrior looking for a more durable laptop.

Questions To Ask Yourself

  1. Where is the unit going to be used?
  2. Will it be in an environment where it could easily be dropped?
  3. Will I be in a constantly changing environment?
  4. Will you be working with the unit in all weather conditions? While outside?
  5. Will you be working outside, needing a screen that is readable in the sunlight?
